ArchiMer
Deslous-paoli, Jean-marc; Zanette, Yvan; Heral, Maurice; Masse, Henri; Garnier, Jacqueline.
The breeding of Pacific oysters Crassostra gigas, in non tidal ponds, before commercialization, brings about an improvement of the shell and of the quantity and quality of the tissues. In fact, the Berthome's indice (1978) moves from 1.36 in June to 0.68 December, and the density of the shell increases in the same time from 1.79 to 1.98. On the other hand, the percentage of tissues in the oyster is 12.4% at the end of gametogenesis and more than 9% at the end of breeding. The dry tissues are composed of 10.3 of ash, 40.3% of proteins, 12.6% of lipids and 9% of carbohydrate. 95% of the carbohydrate are glycogen. The resulting energetic values are measured to 5.10 cal-mg super(-1) of dry tissues ash free.

Characterisation of chitosan from blowfly larvae and some crustacean species from Kenyan marine waters prepared under different conditions OceanDocs
Oduor-Odote, P.M.; Struszczyk, M.H.; Peter, M.G..
Isolation of chitosan from cuticles of blue bottlefly larvae Calliphora erythrocephala, and shells of crab Sylla cerrata, lobster Panulirus ornatus, prawn Paeneaus indicus was carried out. The yield of chitin was 12.0%, 23.0%, 15.7% and 28.0% respectively. In the same order the yield of chitosan was 66.0%, 74.6% 74.3% and 75.0% from chitin. Ash in the crab and lobster chitosan demineralised with 0.5M HCl was 30.2 and 22.4% respectively. This was reduced to 0.2 % for lobster and 0.4% for crab using 2M HCl for demineralisation and 0.5M HCL was adequate for demineralisation of prawns to bring the ash content to < 1%. The ash content in the blowfly larvae was negligible. The conditions used for chitosan isolation in blowfly larvae were milder requiring no...

Evaluation des Risques dus a l'emploi des Peintures Anti-Salissures Dansales Zones Conchylicoles. ArchiMer
Alzieu, Claude; Thibaud, Yves; Heral, Maurice; Boutier, Bernard.
The boats cruising in the oyster growing areas are protected against biofouling by paints which release toxic compounds such as copper oxide and organotins into the water. After an estimation of the inputs of copper and organotins in the "Marennes-Oleron", Arcachon (Atlantic) and Thau (Mediterranean Sea) areas, their influence on larval fixation is discussed, taking into account the tributyltin toxicity against D larvae of Crassostrea gigas. Laboratory experiments have demonstrated that tributyltin produces morphological abnormalities of the shell and increases tin levels in tissues, interfering with copper and zinc metabolism. The influence of yacht ports on oyster growth and shell morphology, has been demonstrated in the field. The use of...

Experimental assessment of oyster transfers as a vector for macroalgal introductions ArchiMer
Mineur, Frederic; Belsher, Thomas; Johnson, Mark P.; Maggs, Christine A.; Verlaque, Marc.
Introduction of non-indigenous species can alter marine communities and ecosystems. In shellfish farming, transfer of livestock, especially oysters, is a common practice and potentially constitutes a pathway for non-indigenous introductions. Many species of seaweeds are believed to have been accidentally introduced in association with these transfers, but there is little direct evidence. We experimentally simulated the transfer of oysters from the Thau Lagoon (France). These transfers involved increasing periods of aerial emersion and additional brine and hot water treatments. The brine and hot water treatments were evaluated as a means of reducing the probability of algal introductions with oyster transfers. Shells were cultured for 40 days in...

Draief, M.N.; Hitonori, N.; Zouari, H.; Guergej, Y.; Lymayem, R..

OCCURRENCE OF MELOIDOGYNE JAVANICA PARASITING ROOTS AND NODULES OF PEANUTS IN PARAGUAY Bragantia
LORDELLO,RUBENS RODOLFO ALBUQUERQUE; LORDELLO,ANA INES LUCENA; GODOY,IGNÁCIO JOSÉ DE.
The root-knot nematode Meloidogyne javanica (Treub, 1885) Chitwood, 1949, was identified in roots, nodules and shells of peanut plants (Arachis hypogaea L.), cv. Florman-INTA, collected from a field in Menno colony, Chaco Central region of Paraguay. Infected plants were observed in patches, showing wilting and drying of vegetative parts. Peanut had been grown ininterruptly for many years in the same area and patches had already been observed in the preceding year in cv. Starr. Nematodes collected from roots in this field reproduced on tomato cultivar rutgers and peanut cultivar florunner and produced egg-masses on roots, nodules and shells of cultivar Florman. This is the first report on M. javanica parasiting peanut in Paraguay.

Jaafar Kefi, F.; Trigui El Menif, N.; Le Pennec, M..

Sexual selection on land snail shell ornamentation: a hypothesis that may explain shell diversity Naturalis
Schilthuizen, M..
Background: Many groups of land snails show great interspecific diversity in shell ornamentation, which may include spines on the shell and flanges on the aperture. Such structures have been explained as camouflage or defence, but the possibility that they might be under sexual selection has not previously been explored. Presentation of the hypothesis: The hypothesis that is presented consists of two parts. First, that shell ornamentation is the result of sexual selection. Second, that such sexual selection has caused the divergence in shell shape in different species. Testing the hypothesis: The first part of the hypothesis may be tested by searching for sexual dimorphism in shell ornamentation in gonochoristic snails, by searching for increased...
